Daily Bible Verse ~ Genesis 19

Are you lingering with sin and evil?

Today’s Daily Bible Verse is going to be a bit different. Rather than reading a few verses and writing a devotional about them, I feel compelled to read a few verses and highlight some key points as we work through the 19th chapter of the book of Genesis.

Today we come to the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Let’s start with verse 1

GENESIS 19:1 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom.

This story starts with God sending angels to the city. If you recall from the previous chapter, Abraham and the Lord are bargaining over whether or not God was going to destroy the city. If I find fifty men, forty men, ok, 10 men Abraham says to the Lord… Obviously ten men could not be found. Sodom and Gomorrah were wicked.

So Lot invites the Angels to stay at his home and they refuse him saying they are going to stay in the town square.

as we move to verse 4
But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. 5[†] And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.”

As we read further down we see that Lot begs the men to not be so wicked. Eventually, they become so overwhelming to him and his family that the angels strike the men with blindness. It says that the men wore themselves out trying to get to the door even after they became blind.

That’s evil!

As We move further into the story, the angels have to force Lot and his family from the house the next morning .

verse 15 – As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city.” 16[†] But he lingered. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city.

God saves Lot, his wife, and his two daughters and then the fury begins. In her temptation and disobedience, Lot’s wife looks back and becomes a pillar of salt.

There is so much in these verses we could talk about but I want to highlight just a couple of things.

  • First, Lot, from early on, has always been tempted by the flesh. If you read through the story of him and Abraham, you see he has desired what is pleasing to the flesh.
  • Next, it took Angels of the Lord to force him to escape from the evil and wickedness. And he LINGERED!!! The Bible doesn’t tell us why he lingered, but we can speculate that he was so far removed from God that he couldn’t even recognize the evil around him. Even to the point that he was willing to give up his virgin daughters to please the evil and wicked men of the city.
  • Lastly, Lots wife looked back and became a pillar of salt.

verse 26 says this… But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

When we are so entangled in sin, we do stupid things. The story in chapter 19 of Genesis teaches us a few lessons:

  • The temptations of the world will always lead to sin and death. James 1:15 says Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death
  • When you flee from the bondage of sin, don’t turn back. A few years ago at our church, whenever anyone was baptized, the same chorus was sung for every person… “and I’m never going back to my old life ever again…”
  • Trust the Lord. Lot lingered… He didn’t trust that what the angels had for them was better. Isaiah 26:3 says You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.

Digging Deeper:

I encourage you today to read the story of Abraham and Lot in the book of Genesis. Chapters 18 and 19.

Apply It:

Moral of the story for you and me… Temptations lead to sin and sin leads to death. When temptation comes, run! Better yet, live your life in such a way that you avoid them at all costs. Trust the Lord! Trust in the Lord with all your heart soul mind and strength. He knows what is best for you and your family.
