Matthew 11:28‭-‬30 ESV Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus says, “Come to me all who are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” Do you believe him today? Are you worn our from all of the crazy going on in your life and in the world? If so, Jesus says to come!

The first three words, “come to me”, are for the believer and the non-believer alike. For the believer it is the call for spiritual rest in Christ. For the non-believer it is the call to release the burden of sin and death and find your rest and salvation in Jesus.

I believe this call is asking at least three things.

  • Are you tired and weary of trying to make it on your own?
  • Has the craziness of life caused you to be depressed and anxious.
  • Are you feeling like there is no hope?

Jesus says, “Come to me and I will give you rest. I won’t load you down with more burdens you can’t carry, the world has done enough of that. I will give you peace, hope, and joy like you have never experienced before. Come to me and I will remove your burdens that have been placed on you. I will give you rest for your souls!”

To the struggling believer He says, “Come to me all who are weighted down by religion and performance. You don’t need to earn your salvation by following a bunch of rules. The enemy has you convinced that you aren’t doing enough… well, you are in me and I am enough! Throw off your yoke of slavery and carry my yoke. It’s the yoke of freedom. The yoke of peace. The yoke of rest.

We are living in very challenging times in our country and around the world. We are in the middle of a global pandemic. We have serious political unrest. Businesses are shutting down and people are losing their jobs, income, and freedoms. The entire world is filled with uncertainty. If you feel like you are carrying that yoke alone, Jesus says to take his yoke upon you. He is the Suffering Servant and his promise is to give you rest. He is gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For his yoke is easy, and his burden is light.

Apply It:

What’s holding you back from casting all your cares onto Jesus? Trust him and the work he did on the cross to secure your salvation. Take all your cares, all your worries, and all your burdens and lay them at his feet… He will give you rest.

I love the part where he says you’ll find rest for your souls. It’s not just physical rest, but it’s the kind of rest that only the Savior can provide. Spiritual rest that doesn’t require anything from you. It’s simply allowing the Holy Spirit to do the work in you that only he can do.

Today I encourage you to stop. Stop fretting about the elections. Stop worrying about your work and family life. Unplug from social media for a while, close your eyes and pray to the Lord to give you rest for your soul.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, I need to find rest in you. Thank you for the promise that you provide rest for my soul by carrying the weight of my life for me. Thank you for the gift of salvation and the promise of eternity with you. Be with me today as I cast my cares onto you. In your Holy Name, Amen.
